Iran’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned a Wednesday terrorist attack in Afghanistan, in which a massive explosion in the heart of capital Kabul’s diplomatic district killed at least 80 people.

Expressing condolences to the Afghan government and nation over the fatal terrorist attack, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi stressed that Iran will always stand by neighboring Afghanistan in difficult situations.

Denouncing employment of violence for achieving an objective, Qassemi underlined that terrorist attacks anywhere, by any group, and with any excuse, are “barbaric” and shameful actions that should be strongly condemned.

He further expressed the hope that political initiatives and negotiations among Afghan groups –without the interference of certain regional and foreign countries which are involved in sponsoring and arming extremist and terrorist groups- would prevent the recurrence of such anti-human moves that have targeted Afghanistan’s stability and security.

On Wednesday morning, a suspected truck bomb ripped through the heart of Kabul's diplomatic district, killing at least 80 people and wounding more than 300 others.

The death toll is expected to rise.

Sources said the suicide attack took place near Zanbaq square, in Kabul's 10th district, close to shops and restaurants, as well as government offices and foreign embassies.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The huge blast also caused minor damages to Iran’s embassy building in Kabul. Two embassy staffers have received minor wounds.
