Iran's cultural week has been kicked off since October 22 in Tartus, western Syria, to further promote cultural ties between the two nations.

'Decentralizing the cultural activities from the Capital and spreading them to other Syrian provinces is the goal of holding Iran's cultural week in Tartus,' said Iran's cultural attaché in Syria Mohammad Hadi Taskhiri.

'Getting Syrian citizens to know more about the Iranian and Islamic culture, civilization and traditions are among other purposes of holding Iran's cultural week in Syria,' Taskhiri added.

An exhibition of the Iranian handicrafts and calligraphies as well as images of Iran's progress is being held on the sidelines of the cultural week programs in addition to a book fair and a photo exhibition from prominent Iranian figures and the country's natural sceneries.

Some Iranian movies of different genres are also to be screened during the cultural event.

A number of Syrian cultural officials as well as Iran's chargé d'affaires in Damascus attended the opening ceremony of the event.

Being located on western Syria, Tartus borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Lebanon to the south, Homs and Hama provinces to the west. Its strategic port on the Mediterranean shores is of great economic and military importance.
