Light quake jolts southwestern province in Iran

An earthquake, measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale, shook Shahr-e Pir in the southwestern province of Fars.

Shahr-e Pir is a city and capital of Izadkhvast District in Zarrin Dasht County of Fars Province.

According to the Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 19:09 hours local time (15:39 GMT) on Wednesday at the depth of 10 km underground.

The epicenter of the quake was located at 28.11 degrees longitude and 54.31 degrees latitude.

No report has so far been released on the likely casualties or damage to property.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.

On November 12, 2017, a fatal 7.3-measuring earthquake hit the provincial city of Salas Babajani killing 620 people and injuring about 12,000 others.
