Iran vows to respond to Europeans’ interventionist behavior

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman on Monday warned European countries that Iran would respond reciprocally if they continue interventionist behavior.

In his weekly press conference, Nasser Kanaani said about the recent unrest in Iran that the European countries have double standards in dealing with protests in Iran versus those in their own countries.

Kanaani said that Iran is a responsible state that respects its citizens’ views and their security and that Iran has also played an important role in protecting the security of other countries in the region.

He said that European countries have a responsibility to protect Iranian embassies, but they did not fulfill their obligation in this regard.

An Iranian school and Islamic centers being attacked in other countries are among the examples of Europe’s negligence with regard to safeguarding Iranian places.

On the recent sanctions imposed by the UK on some Iranian officials, Kanaani said that Tehran protested seriously and would respond proportionately.

Asked if Iran considers the talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal as terminated, the spokesman rejected and said that the problem is the American officials’ contradictory behavior and comments, as they continue to trade messages while doing things that cannot be considered complementary to the negotiations process.

The diplomat said that Iran had not sent any weapons to any conflicting side in the war between Ukraine and Russia and that Iran objects to the war and tries to help stop it.

On the recent incident in Evin prison in northern Tehran, the spokesman slammed interventionist comments made by European and American officials and said that the government continues to protect foreign nationals the same as it does for Iranian citizens.

About prisoners' exchange with the US, he said that Iran was ready for a prisoner swap agreement and such an agreement was reached before, but the US was not ready to implement the deal.

He said that Americans link prisoner swaps with the talks to revive the JCPOA, but Iran wouldn’t accept this.

Kanaani described possible European sanctions against Iran as unconstructive and irrational, warning that Iran would reciprocally counteract with a proportionate measure.
