Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has once again criticized the activation of the snapback mechanism to reinstate UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic, warning that the anti-Iran move by Britain, France, and Germany — known collectively as the E3 or European Troika— will have unpleasant consequences for diplomatic processes.

Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting with his Swiss counterpart, Ignazio Cassis, on the sidelines of the 80th annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.

The two top diplomats discussed bilateral relations between Iran and Switzerland, as well as regional and international developments.

Referring to the process of snapback of sanctions, Araghchi warned the three European countries against their “irresponsible approach” regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, calling the European Troika’s “insistence on abusing the UN Security Council mechanisms to exert pressure on Iran” unacceptable.

He underscored that Europeans and the United States, due to their repeated violations of their commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, and after the June military aggression against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, have no authority to resort to the dispute resolution mechanism of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the deal.

Araghchi, accompanying a delegation, arrived in New York on Monday to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He will participate in meetings and discussions to explain Iran’s positions and views.

He has been holding separate meetings with his counterparts from different countries and talking to media since his arrival at the UN headquarters.
