According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, the Tehran derby between Esteghlal and Persepolis will take place at 3 p.m. (local time) this Friday at Imam Khomeini Stadium in Arak. Based on the latest updates, female supporters will be able to watch the match from the stands.
In last season’s derby held in Arak, female fans were not permitted to attend, but this time both teams will play in the presence of their women supporters.
In Iran, a highly popular derby is held between the two major Tehran clubs, commonly referred to as the “Shahravard.” This match between Esteghlal and Persepolis is traditionally played at the 100,000-seat Azadi Stadium. Millions of viewers follow the game on television and radio. The ongoing rivalry and playful disputes between the fans of the two sides significantly add to the excitement of the event.
Women’s attendance in Iranian stadiums has occurred at different points in history. The first presence of women—foreign women—at Azadi Stadium took place in 1998, after which foreign women were allowed to attend international matches.
Despite years of restrictions for Iranian women, they were able to attend a World Cup qualifying match in the lead-up to the 2006 tournament. In 2019, Iranian women once again gained official permission to enter Azadi Stadium and watch football matches after many years of prohibition.
