Iran foreign minister meets Azerbaijan president in Baku

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku, where the two sides discussed a wide range of bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.

Araghchi traveled to Baku on Sunday as part of an official visit to boost Tehran–Baku relations.

During his trip, he is also scheduled to meet Azerbaijan’s foreign minister and several other senior officials for talks focused on political cooperation, regional developments, and broader international matters.

Speaking at a press briefing earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei highlighted the significance of the visit, describing relations between Iran and Azerbaijan as very important.

Baqaei emphasized the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties shared by the two neighboring nations, noting that such commonalities create strong foundations for expanding cooperation.

The official added that Iran seeks to enhance diplomatic engagement with Azerbaijan as part of its broader effort to promote understanding, peace, and stability in the South Caucasus, an area of strategic importance for both countries.

Over the past three decades, relations between Iran and Azerbaijan have been shaped by shared heritage and geographical proximity, forming a multi-layered partnership since Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991.
