Two to Four Years in Prison for Two Iranian Track and Field Athletes in South Korean Rape Case

A court in South Korea has issued its preliminary ruling in the case involving four members of Iran’s national track and field team who were prosecuted on charges of sexual assault. Under the ruling, two of the defendants have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from two to four years, while the other two have been acquitted.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, The case was brought over allegations of the rape of a South Korean woman and has been under judicial review in recent weeks. After an initial examination of the evidence and the statements of both sides, the court handed down prison sentences to two of the Iranian athletes and dismissed the charges against the remaining two, finding them not guilty.

The two athletes who received prison sentences have filed appeals against the ruling, meaning the verdict is not yet final. The court has stated that a final decision will be issued after the appeals process is completed.

The case dates back to mid-June, when three Iranian athletes and one track and field coach were arrested in South Korea. The arrests received widespread coverage in Iranian domestic media as well as in some international outlets, drawing attention to the legal situation of foreign athletes involved in criminal cases abroad.
