According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, Earlier, Iran’s judiciary spokesperson stated that the dual national had been arrested in connection with a detention linked to the 12-day war.
The Times of Israel quoted Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard as saying that the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs had received reports indicating that a death sentence had been issued, but had not yet been able to verify their accuracy. She added: “We are working to establish whether this information is correct, and in this context we summoned the Iranian ambassador on Wednesday to clearly condemn the death sentence.”
Without referring directly to the details of the espionage allegations, Malmer Stenergard said: “Sweden’s and the European Union’s position on the death penalty is absolutely clear. We always oppose it, at any time and in any place, and this position is completely transparent.”
Sweden’s move comes as diplomatic relations between Tehran and several European countries remain sensitive and strained due to human rights and judicial cases involving dual nationals.
