Ali Shamkhani Appointed As Secretary of Iran’s Supreme Defense Council

Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani has been appointed Secretary of the Supreme Defense Council by the Iranian Presidency.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, In this regard, several points should be noted:

Shamkhani has held senior command positions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps since the period of the Sacred Defense (Iran- Iraq war). After the war, he gained high-level managerial experience in strategic fields, including the naval forces of the Army and the IRGC, the Ministry of Defense, and missile and nuclear projects.

He is a brave and fearless individual with a strategic vision, and many of the country’s missile and nuclear advancements are attributed to his behind-the-scenes efforts.

Shamkhani was among the 53 individuals whose names were given by the JCPOA negotiating officials to the opposing side under the title of managers of nuclear and missile projects, which led to serious dissatisfaction and tension between him and the negotiating team at that time.

Abdul Qadeer Khan claims that during the Khatami administration, Shamkhani secretly pursued the purchase of Pakistani centrifuges and nuclear weapons design plans on behalf of Iran. He also recently stated in an interview: “Today it has been proven that Iran must have a nuclear bomb, and if I return to the 1990s, I would definitely build an atomic bomb.”

Enemies have repeatedly attempted to physically and reputationally assassinate Shamkhani, indicating the importance of eliminating him for the enemies of the Islamic Republic.

The above points do not prevent acknowledging the economic shortcomings related to the lives of his children; however, there is no doubt that Shamkhani is one of the strategic and powerful figures of the Islamic Republic and a trusted individual of the Supreme Leader. The Commander-in-Chief has repeatedly made use of his capabilities to advance major military projects.

In conclusion, considering Shamkhani’s valuable experience since the beginning of the Revolution, the current sensitive conditions, and recent U.S. threats, the appointment of this senior commander could create effective coordination among military and security institutions for the proper management of potential conflicts.
