A senior Thai legislator reiterated Iran's important role in Asia and the region, and announced Bangkok's enthusiasm for the further expansion of ties with Tehran.

President of Thailand's Senate Nikom Wairatpanij praised Iran as a key player in Asia, and underscored Thailand's resolve to maintain amicable relations with the Islamic Republic.

The president of the Thai Senate pointed out that Tehran and Bangkok should draw on all the existing potentials to promote their ties in political, economic and cultural spheres.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Chairman of the Executive Council of Iran's Inter-Parliamentary Group Iraj Nadimi on the sidelines of the 127th meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Canada on Wednesday.

"The friendly ties between the people and officials of the two countries, which are rooted in history, must still continue in the path of growth and development," said Nadimi.

The Iranian legislator noted that Tehran and Bangkok should use the IPU as a proper opportunity to expand their mutual cooperation.

Iran and Thailand's top diplomats in a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York in 2011 had explored avenues for the further expansion of relations and cooperation.

During the meeting in September 2011, Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi underlined Tehran's resolve to further expand relations with Thailand, and voiced Iran's preparedness to promote the level of cooperation with Bangkok in all the various political, economic, trade, cultural and scientific grounds.

He further cited the two countries' coordination at international bodies and circles as among other areas for Tehran-Bangkok cooperation.

He also described exchange of delegations at different levels as a constructive measure for expediting development of bilateral relations and cooperation.

Also during the meeting, the Thai foreign minister underlined the two countries' cordial ties, and asked for the bolstering and boosting of Tehran-Bangkok cooperation through continued and regular political consultations and follow-ups on the agreements made by the two states' joint economic cooperation commission and consular cooperation committee.
