The massacre of Myanmar's innocent and Muslim people revealed the imperialist nature of those who disingenuously voice advocacy for human rights, read the statement signed by 232 Iranian lawmakers on Sunday.
“This is not the first time that we have witnessed the shameful silence and discriminatory approach of the global arrogance… towards genocide, terrorist and anti-human rights measures,” the statement read.
Reports say 650 Rohingya Muslims were killed as of June 28 alone during clashes in the western region of Rakhine. This is while 1,200 others are missing and 80,000 more have been displaced.
The UN says decades of discrimination have left the Rohingyas stateless, with Myanmar implementing restrictions on their movement and withholding land rights, education and public services.
The government of Myanmar does not recognize Rohingya Muslims and has denied citizenship to them, claiming that they are illegal migrants.
In their statement, the Iranian lawmakers also condemned the “terrorist measures backed by arrogant powers and the Zionist regime (Israel) in Syria.”
They called on the international community and human rights organizations to meet their duty by adopting necessary stances in order to defend the rights of Myanmar's Muslims and make efforts to resolve Syria’s political crisis.
