An Iranian lawmaker has called on Syria’s neighboring countries to join hands and find a logical solution to the ongoing crisis in the Arab state.

"The logical solution that Syria’s neighboring countries can work out is to join hands and lead the Syrian government towards freedom of political parties and groups and the rule of law, instead of unreasonably supporting various groups and sending forces, arms, and [military] equipment [into Syria]," Hossein Sobhani-Nia, a member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee noted on Saturday.

“The Syrian government has taken measures in this regard and neighboring countries should help the Syrian government to achieve these frameworks,” he added.

Referring to a proposal by the Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi for the establishment of a contact group to resolve the Syrian crisis, the lawmaker upheld the idea, saying it would help member states of the contact group to take a more realistic approach to various issues.

“The contact group should include countries which have not taken any position on Syria beforehand. In fact, they should aim to shed light on the existing realities.”

On the sidelines of the recent summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on Aug. 14-15, Morsi proposed formation of a contact group comprising Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt to resolve regional crises including that of Syrian.

Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011, and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
