“The Westerners know well that the hosting of [NAM] the summit by Tehran will improve the Islamic Republic’s status in the region and the globe and will demonstrate to the world that Iran enjoys full stability and security,” Ali Akbar Aqaei said on Sunday.
He added that the NAM summit in Tehran would result in long-term consequences in Iran's favor in international equations.
The lawmaker noted that the presence of the most high-ranking officials from over 40 countries in the meeting would convey the message to the West that Iran is a powerful and influential country in the world and that their efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic have failed.
Aqaei described the summit as a great opportunity for Iran, and emphasized that it would play a significant role in reducing regional crises, countering the sanctions against Tehran and restoring its nuclear rights.
The 16th summit of the NAM member states will be held on August 26-31 in the Iranian capital during which the Islamic Republic will assume the rotating presidency of the movement for three years.
Director General for International Affairs at Iran’s Presidential Office and the spokesman for the organizing committee of the summit Mohammad-Reza Forqani said on Saturday that the heads of 35 NAM member states will attend the Tehran summit and added that around 100 countries have so far expressed their readiness to participate in the meeting.
NAM, an international organization with 120 member states and 21 observer countries, is considered as not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.
