FM Spox: US still a power but no longer a superpower

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has rejected the concept of a unipolar world, saying that the United States is still a power, but it is no longer a superpower.

Kanaani made the remarks addressing his press conference on Monday.

Referring to the recent developments between Iran and Saudi Arabia, he said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a country that enjoys many capacities and has always been one of the influential members in regional and international developments due to its undeniable role in regional equations.

Regarding the invitation of heads of Iran and Saudi Arabia, Kanaani said Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers had earlier invited each other.

The invitation from Saudi king for President Ebrahim Raisi has also been received and the Iranian president has invited the Saudi king as well.

We do not tie relations with the world to the JCPOA, he stressed.

He noted that Iran will not limit its foreign relations to a specific region or a specific bloc.

Commenting on the issue of Afghanistan, Kanaani said that Iran’s policy regarding Afghanistan is not ambiguous and contradictory.

He emphasized that Iran supports peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Among Iran's approaches with regard to Afghanistan's issue are opposition to the presence of foreign actors under various pretexts and the use of different tools, including terrorism, and opposition to foreign intervention in this country, he said.

During the Samarkand summit, in a meeting with Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan's Taliban Amir Khan Muttaqi, Iran stressed the necessity of forming an inclusive government with the participation of all ethnic groups and an effective fight against terrorism, drug production, and trafficking; serious opposition to depriving women education; preventing women from playing their roles and having jobs, he said.

Kanaani rejected duality in Iran’s stance toward Afghanistan and the Taliban, saying that the issue of the Helmand water right was followed up during the Samarkand summit.

He noted that border security and solving the issues related to millions of Afghan refugees need coordination.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he pointed to the issue of Azerbaijan, saying that the Islamic Republic of Iran and Azerbaijan have enemies.

The Zionist regime is one of the enemies of the bilateral relations between the two countries and two nations, he added.

The Islamic Republic of Iran underlines establishing good neighborliness and friendly relations and mutual respect and focusing on common interests, Kanaani said.

Understanding these concerns that some people benefit from creating differences between the two countries, Iran tried to overcome the recent tensions through diplomatic initiatives and used political and diplomatic approaches to manage relations, he said.

Touching on the talks between the Islamic Republic and the world powers, he said that Iran has never left the negotiating table and has always expressed readiness to conclude the negotiations on lifting sanctions.

The West is seeking to launch a hybrid war against Iran, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman further noted.

Referring to the court verdict on the downing of the Ukrainian passenger plane near Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in 2020, Kanaani noted that the court’s decision over the incident is in accordance with the Chicago Convention on which the Islamic Republic of Iran acted responsibly.

He went on to say that the verdict is also based on the national laws of Iran in which the accident took place.

The maximum sentences have been issued in this regard, the official added.

As to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, he said that the security and stability of the state are of prime importance to the Islamic Republic.

Kanaani termed Sudan as an important Islamic, Arabic country.

Considering the constructive efforts made by all sides willing to de-escalate tensions in Sudan, he hoped that the bloody conflict would come to and in the Islamic country.

Touching upon Syria's return to the Arab League, Kanaani expressed satisfaction over the published news and hoped that the processes of Syria’s return to the Arab League would occur quickly.

He expressed his pleasure about the positive and promising movements in the region, highlighting that the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes any diplomatic efforts to restore mutual ties among Arab countries with Syria.

When asked about the different stance of Qatar with other members of the League on Syria’s return, he said that he had not received confirmed news to make a comment.
