Iranian President Arrives in Damascus

In a landmark visit to Syria on Wednesday, the first by an Iranian president in over 13 years, President Ebrahim Raisi held a meeting with his Syrian counterpart.

Heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation, the Iranian president arrived in Damascus on Wednesday for a two-day visit.

The Iranian president received a formal welcome from his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad at the Palace of People in Damascus.

The two presidents co-chaired a meeting of high-ranking delegations of Iran and Syria afterwards.

Speaking to reporters before leaving Iran, Raisi said the trip is aimed at strengthening the political, economic and security cooperation between the two allies.

The Iranian president also noted that he would discuss plans to expedite the implementation of the previous agreements, expressing confidence that closer relations between Tehran and Damascus would serve the interests of the two nations and the region.

The Iranian administration’s spokesman said on Tuesday that the presidential visit to Syria will revolve around economic affairs, adding that Iran is prepared to provide Syria with its technical and engineering capabilities in the reconstruction process in the same way that it assisted the Arab country in the fight against terrorism.
