NAM needs to harness potential to shape global politics: Iran FM

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, after attending the ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Baku, has penned an article outlining the movement’s crucial role in tackling today’s complex global challenges.

Amirabdollahian began his commentary, published by IRNA on Thursday, by recalling the formation of the Non-Aligned Movement in Bandung, Indonesia, in 1955, when leaders of the Third World sought to adopt an independent stance towards the dominant powers of that era, the United States and the Soviet Union.

The primary objectives of the predominantly Asian and African countries involved were to review and redesign the “existing international order” and gradually bring about changes in the global and domestic structures of the time to establish an “independent” position within the international system, he argued.

Iran’s top diplomat contended that today that NAM possesses great potential to influence global power equations and offer unique capacities to member countries. He emphasized that if member countries can effectively harness this potential, the movement will undoubtedly play “a constructive role” in shaping the future landscape of global politics.

Furthermore, Amirabdollahian stressed the necessity of redefining the role and position of NAM based on an analysis of its current structure and performance. He called for transforming the movement from a “passive to an active state” and strengthening and guiding it towards “peace, stability, and the realization of human ideals” to overcome “unilateralism, insecurity, and discrimination.”

The foreign minister underscored the multitude of challenges that member countries currently face in areas such as security, social issues, environmental concerns, health, refugees, illicit drugs, organized international crime, and terrorism. He called for urgent planning and collective action among member countries to address these issues.

As a key member of NAM, he said, the Islamic Republic of Iran has consistently supported the strengthening of the movement and the “development and prosperity” of member countries since the victory of the Islamic Revolution.

Amirabdollahian highlighted the shared values between Iran and many other NAM member states on issues such as a “nuclear-free Middle East,” “non-military intervention in regional affairs,” “regional coalition-building for peace,” and “collective security.”

These common viewpoints have provided significant opportunities for cooperation and convergence among member countries, he said.

Amirabdollahian concluded by reiterating Iran’s commitment to the Non-Aligned Movement’s principles and its continued efforts to enhance the movement's role in promoting global peace, stability, and cooperation among member states.
