Amirabdollahian: Iran-US Prisoner Swap Humanitarian Issue

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that exchange of prisoners between Tehran and Washington is a purely humanitarian issue, adding that his country has no pre-conditions in this regard.

The top diplomat made the remarks on the sidelines of a conference entitled “Iran and BRICS: Prospects for Partnership and Cooperation” in Tehran on Tuesday.

Amir Abdollahian went on to say that messages have been exchanged between Iran and the United States through Oman and Qatar in this regard for some months.

“The issue of prisoner exchange is a humanitarian one and we do not consider any preconditions for it. We have announced to the intermediary parties that we will exchange prisoners within agreed frameworks,” he continued.

Iran has repeatedly stressed the agreement reached with the United States for the exchange of prisoners between the two countries should not be politicized.

Tehran has numerously urged Washington to free Iranian nationals who have been taken hostage for baseless reasons under the pretext that they have bypassed and violated the US sanctions. Iran has also blasted the US for linking a humanitarian exchange of prisoners with the talks over the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal. Officials have called on President Joe Biden's administration to act instead of performing theatrical shows.

Some Iranians are in US jails just because of ignoring Washington's illegal sanctions on Tehran.
