An Iranian lawmaker has described the recent mistreatment of an Iranian diplomat in Germany as a new smear campaign against Iran with the aim of tarnishing the Islamic Republic’s image in the world.

Esmail Kowsari, a member of the Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, on Sunday strongly protested the police confrontation with an Iranian diplomat in the central German city of Frankfurt, IRNA reported.

Arrogant powers, unable to harm Iran militarily and diplomatically, are seeking this time to damage the country's reputation, he stated.

The Iranian legislator condemned the move as an anti-Iran scenario orchestrated by the United States and Israel, stressing that “Today the enemies are striving to prepare media feed against the Islamic Republic in the world to make others pessimistic about this country.”

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi on Sunday revealed a joint plot by the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) and the German tabloid Bild to deface an Iranian diplomat.

“The orchestrated attempt of the MKO and the Zionist tabloid, the Bild, in plotting, implementing and fueling this fabricated scenario once again indicates their convergence in hatching plots and conspiracies against the Islamic Republic,” Qashqavi said.

The Iranian official stressed that, given the grievances suffered by the Iranian consular member at the hands of the Frankfurt police, Iran's Foreign Ministry will pursue the restoration of the rights of the Iranian diplomat.

On July 4, the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned German Ambassador to Tehran Bernd Erbel to protest about German police mistreatment of an Iranian diplomat.

Qashqavi said that a member of the Iranian consulate in Frankfurt, who was on the way home on July 2, was assaulted by a woman of African descent, but German police, instead of dealing with the attacker, violated diplomatic norms and treated the Iranian diplomat harshly and improperly.

The Iranian government has also demanded German officials to launch an immediate investigation and explain the police misbehavior.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Berlin and its consulate in Frankfurt have also sent letters to German officials, made contacts and held talks with them to voice Tehran’s protest over the matter.
