Former president Mohammad Khatami and his first deputy Mohammad Reza Aref are possible reformist candidates of the Popular Front of Reforms in the 2013 presidential election, according to Mohammad Zare Foumani, the secretary general of the front.

Foumani made the remarks during an interview with the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency published on Monday.

“Three principlists who have defended and supported reformism in their remarks and meetings and are moderate are our three other possible candidates. However, the priority is with reformist candidates,” Zare Foumani said, without naming the possible principlist candidates.

“Whichever candidate that wins the highest number of votes at the strategic council of the front will be our election candidate,” he added.

He also said, “Our meetings about the election began after the Majlis election, and we have achieved good results, and the situation is ripe for a successful and strong presence.”

The first round of the parliamentary election and a run-off were held on March 2 and May 4 respectively.

“We have so far held meetings with a number of figures, including Khatami, (Akbar) Hashemi (Rafsanjani), and (former interior minister) Abdollah Nouri, and some other ones, but we cannot release information about them,” Zare Foumani stated.

He added, “The Popular Front of Reforms has gone so far that it has brought all moderate reformists on board and will enter the election with a moderate approach and will definitely gain a good number of votes.”

“The people have become fed up with the principlists due to the internal disagreements that they are experiencing. Therefore, the reformists have been provided with an opportunity to drum up support from the people,” Zare Foumani concluded.
