Iran called on the US administration to show a strong reaction to those behind the production and the release of an anti-Islam movie in the US.

Speaking to reporters in New York, Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations Mohammad Khazayee said that the release of the movie insulting Islam's Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is part of a project to spread Islamophobia in the world.

"If the western countries and the US had shown serious reaction to the desecration of religious sanctities, we wouldn't have witnessed the recent insult," Khazayee underscored.

"Such moves will eventually intensify clashes among religions, nations and cultures and will not be in the interest of humanity," the envoy said.

He criticized the United States' inaction vis-à-vis the Koran-burning stunt by US Pastor Terry Jones, and said, "We seriously expect the US administration … to show a tough reaction to the elements behind this recent inhuman and irrational move."

The film called "Innocence of Muslims", previously called Desert Warriors and Innocence of Bin Laden, is a 2012 anti-Muslim movie which insults Muslims' Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The film has been financed by more than 100 Jews and produced by an American-Israeli man in the US.

The film was being promoted by a Florida pastor, Terry Jones, known for previous Quran-burning stunts that angered Muslims in various countries.
