An official at Azerbaijan’s presidential office has rejected media reports that Baku and Tel Aviv have drawn a joint plan aimed at facilitating an Israeli attack on Iran.

Novruz Mammadov, the head of the Foreign Relations Department of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, said in an interview with News.az website that such media reports aimed to damage the relations between Iran and Azerbaijan but failed.

Describing the ties between Tehran and Baku as normal, the Azeri official said that Azerbaijan’s president holds a clear stance on Iran and that Azerbaijan is willing to maintain its normal relations with the Islamic Republic.

Media reports had revived speculations about Azerbaijan facilitating an Israeli attack against Iran after leaked intelligence from two 'former Azeri military officers with links to serving personnel' said late September that Azerbaijan and Israel have been looking at how Azeri bases and intelligence could serve in a possible strike on Iran.

Back in March, a report published in an American magazine said that Azerbaijan has granted Israel access to airbases in the country. The claim was rejected by Baku.

On October 19, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov said that Baku will never allow its territory to be used against Iran.

Stressing that Azerbaijan attaches great significance to Iran’s security, the top Azeri diplomat said that some media outlets bring up such illogical and unwise claims regarding an attack against Iran to achieve certain objectives.

He added that such speculations were totally unrealistic and impossible and were aimed at damaging the Iran-Azerbaijan relations.

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program with Tel Aviv using this pretext to threaten Iran with a military option.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
