Iran’s deputy foreign minister says the Islamic Republic has constantly played an influential role in resolving the crises that have erupted in neighboring countries in the past years.

“Iran, in the past years, has invariably been an effective part in resolving regional crises,” Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Wednesday.

Tehran “has proven its positive and influential role in line with the nations’ interests, regional and global peace and stability while emphasizing the significance of dialogue and a political solution,” he added.

The official referred to the Islamic Republic’s constructive role in “critical and complicated issues such as the issue of Afghanistan, Iraq and Lebanon.”

The remarks come one day after Tehran announced its decision to host a meeting to bring together representatives of various Syrian ethnicities, political groups, minorities, the opposition, and the state officials.

The one-day meeting will be held with the main theme of “No to Violence, Yes to Democracy.”

Amir-Abdollahian reiterated Iran’s opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs and highlighted the need for the restoration of security before inclusive talks could be held among various parties involved in the country’s elongated standoff.

“Tehran strongly believes that the only plausible and political strategy to resolve the Syria crisis is serious and inclusive talks among forces who enjoy popular positions with influential sides,” he stated.

The official condemned the foreign-backed armed men fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for their irresponsible insurgency that has taken a heavy toll on Syrian civilians.

Amir-Abdollahian described efforts to stop the ongoing violence in Syria as a humanitarian obligation, and gave Iran’s full support to any regional and international efforts in line with a “peaceful and impartial” resolution of the crisis.
