A Lebanese army statement says that Lebanese troops have clashed with foreign-backed Syrian militants on the border between the two countries.

Members of the self-proclaimed Free Syrian Army opened fire across the border on a Lebanese army post in the Bekaa valley on Sunday, and Lebanese troops returned fire, the army statement said.

"At 6:30 p.m. (1630 GMT), gunmen opened fire from across the border in Syria at a Lebanese army post in the Masharia al-Qaa area" of the Bekaa, the statement added.

"Troops in the post responded by shooting back," it stated, adding that there have been no immediate reports of casualties.

There has been frequent violence on Lebanon's border with Syria ever since the Syrian crisis began in March 2011.

Many Syrians, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the armed militants are foreign nationals.
