A senior Iranian official says Tehran and Moscow share similar views on Syria, stressing that there has been no change in Russia's position on the Syrian government.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Friday that Iran and Russia regularly confer on the Middle East developments and particularly the situation in Syria.

“We [both] support Syrians and national dialogue, and are against foreign intervention [in Syria],” he said.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister added that elections and popular vote in a democratic atmosphere and away from the foreign psycho-political pressure will determine Syria's future.

Amir-Abdollahian also stressed that terrorist attacks in Syria are doomed to fail.

On Friday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Alexander Lukashevich stated that his country stands its ground on Syria, highlighting that there is no alternative to a political solution in the conflict-plagued Arab state.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says certain Western states, especially the United States, and their regional allies are fueling the unrest.
