Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says Russia has not changed its position on Syria.

“No change has occurred in Russia’s stance towards Syria,” Amir-Abdollahian said on Tuesday after meetings with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and Deputy Chairman of Russian Federation Council Ilyas Umakhanov in Moscow.

“Today, terrorists are simultaneously targeting the people and political efforts [underway] for settling crisis in Syria, but Iran and Russia are of the view that a political solution should be found,” the Iranian official added.

He said during his talks with Russian officials, Tehran and Moscow have opposed the continuation of conflict and measures taken by Arab-Western anti-Syrian camp for military intervention in Syria.

Amir-Abdollahian also announced Russia’s support for Iran’s six-point peace plan for Syria.

“Russia backs the outlines of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s proposal for Syria and considers it balanced, capable of ending crisis, and conformant to this country’s [Russia] strategy [in Syria].”

On Sunday Iran detailed the long-awaited plan, which urges talks between the Syrian government and representatives of all Syrian groups regardless of their political and social tendencies in order to form a national reconciliation committee.

For his part, Umakhanov said Iran and Russia share views about the ongoing developments in Syria.

“Consultations with the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the Middle East and Syrian developments are highly significant for Russia,” he added.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.
