An Iranian lawmaker says the Syrian government’s "political behavior" proves that it remains committed to a negotiated solution to the ongoing crisis in the country.

“The Syrian government has taken the path of dialogue and negotiations since the outset of the tensions in the country and always supports plans based on reconciliation and negotiation,” a member of the Majlis Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy Mohammad Saleh Jokar said on Wednesday.

“Foreign plans to resolve the Syrian crisis are not acceptable to the Syrian people,” he added.

The Iranian legislator noted that foreigners dispatched armed opposition groups to Syria to provoke unrest in the Arab country.

The Syrian public will never cooperate with the plans imposed from outside the country because it well knows that Western powers only think of their own national interests, Jokar pointed out.

The Iranian lawmaker’s remarks came after Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi said on December 31 that Damascus would respond to any initiative meant to resolve the turmoil in Syria through dialogue.

“The government is working to support the national reconciliation project and will respond to any regional or international initiative that would solve the current crisis through dialogue and peaceful means and prevent foreign intervention in Syria’s internal affairs,” Halqi said.

He made the remark a day after UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said he had a peace plan acceptable to all sides.

On Sunday, Brahimi said he had crafted a new initiative that “could be adopted by the international community.”

Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011. The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside.
