Rohani, who heads the Expediency Council's Center for Strategic Research made the remarks in a meeting with the Norwegian Ambassador to Tehran Jens-Petter Kjemprud on Sunday
Considering the fatwa (religious decree) issued by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on the prohibition of building nuclear weapons and Iran's record of close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) over the past 10 years, there is no justification for the sanctions against Iran, he said.
“Europeans have false perceptions of the situation in Iran,” Rohani said referring to the lack of Europe’s independence in making decision on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Kjemprud, for his part, said his country is keen on expanding political and technological cooperation with the Islamic Republic.
The ambassador also praised Iran’s efforts to reduce the Syrian crisis, saying Norway also wants an immediate end to the unrest in the Arab country and stability in the region.
On February 22, 2012, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Islamic Republic considers the pursuit and possession of nuclear weapons “a grave sin” from every logical, religious and theoretical standpoint.
The US, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program.
Iran argues that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the IAEA, it is entitled to develop and acquire nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
