Leader offers condolences over demise of Ayatollah Shahroudi

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in a message extended condolences over the demise of the late Chairman of Expediency Council Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi.

'I express my condolences on the passing away of the noble faqih and the chairman of the Council of Expediency, Ayatollah Hashemi Shahroudi; and I ask God to grant him mercy, forgiveness and elevate his ranks in the Heaven,' the message reads. 

Ayatollah Shahroudi was a great instructor at Qom Seminary, a faithful member of the most important organ of Iran, (Assembly of Experts), an effective member of the Guardian Council and a successful chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council, the leader added.

In his message, Supreme Leader condoled with the family of the late Ayatollah, Qom Seminary, his students and colleagues. 

Ayatollah Shahroudi was born in Najaf, Iraq, in 1948 and had served as a member of the Guardian Council as of 1994.

He was also judiciary chief and member of Experts Council. As of 2017, he was chairman of Expediency Council.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will lead mass prayers for the body of the deceased Ayatollah Shahroudi during his funeral ceremony on Wednesday.
