Iran’s Ambassador in Iraq Iraj Masjedi on Sunday had a meeting with the UN envoy on Iraq Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert during which they both emphasized the necessity of holding parliamentary elections on time.

Masjedi told the UN official that Iran supports Iraq’s security and holding parliamentary elections in the country.

He stressed Iran's respects for Iraqi people’s vote.

The Ambassador also reiterated that Iran’s Iraq policy will remain unchanged after president-elect Ebrahim Raisi takes office.

Asked about reports on the possibility of postponing Iraq’s parliamentary elections and interference of some countries like the US and the UK, Masjedi underlined that he and the UN envoy both emphasized on the necessity of holding the elections on-time and other states’ cooperation with Iraqi government to hold the elections.

Iraqis are going to vote for the new parliament on October 10, 2021. The parliamentary election was set to be held on June 6, but was postponed for four months because of objections from some political fractions.
