Iran petroleum and petrochemical industry

Given the strategic nature, high income, and extensive scope of the oil and petrochemical industry, it has been able to sustain its position as one of the leading industries during the industrial era.

The aforementioned matter has also had an impact on the oil and petrochemical industry in Iran. In recent years, significant attention has been directed towards this sector.

The utilization of petroleum products, derived from crude oil through the process of oil refining, is widespread. The primary application of petroleum products is for energy generation, with fuel oil and gasoline being the most commonly used products for this purpose. Petrochemical products refer to chemical and polymer materials that are derived from either oil or natural gas. These products play a crucial role in the chemical and polymer industries, as there is a continuous increase in demand for synthetic materials and plastics.

Various kinds of petroleum and petrochemical products in Iran

Petroleum products

Iran is one of the largest producers and exporters of petroleum in Iran, and several types of petroleum products are produced in Iran, including:

Crude oil, natural gas, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), compressed natural gas (CNG), gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, jet fuel, naphtha (light & Heavy), kerosene, bitumen, base oils, liquid paraffin, and petroleum supplements. Most of these products are used as fuels in different transportation vehicles, such as cars, trucks, trains, and ships. Some of them has a different application. For example bitumen is used in road constructions, industrial applications, waterproofing of buildings, and electrical insulation. Also, Iran is known for the production of high-quality bitumen that meets the international standards.

Petroleum supplements refer to products that are added to petroleum-based fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, to improve their performance and reduce harmful emissions, such as renewable energy sources.

Petrochemical products

Iran is a major producer of petrochemical products, with a diverse range of products, including:

Ethylene, which finds its application in the production of various products such as plastics, films, detergents, synthetic lubricants, and styrene which is used for making protective packaging.

Methanol: A greenhouse fuel, which is often used in rocket fuel.

Polyethylene: A petrochemical product, which is mostly used in the production of plastics.

Propylene: Polypropylene is a highly versatile plastic polymer that is used to produce a wide range of products, including carpets and structural flooring.

Epoxy resin: Iran is one of the top producers of epoxy resins. It is used in a variety of applications, such as adhesives, and coating.

Urea: According to industry reports, Iran has a significant presence in the urea production market and is recognized as one of the leading global producers and exporters of urea. Urea, a crucial chemical compound, is extensively utilized as a fertilizer in the agricultural sector. The urea produced in Iran is widely regarded as being of superior quality.

Benzene, ammonia, toluene, ethylene glycol, xylene, butadiene, sulfur, and Paraffin wax are also some other petrochemical products that are produced in Iran.
