US Media Criticize Seattle Committee for Labeling Iran–Egypt Match as “Pride Game”

Several American outlets have criticized the Seattle Local Organizing Committee after it designated the Iran–Egypt World Cup match as a “Pride Game” in solidarity with the LGBTQ community.

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, The move — described as provocative — drew objections even from conservative U.S. media such as OutKick and Newsweek, which called the decision a “cultural failure” and “non-sporting.”

The designation also contradicts FIFA’s “Respect for Cultures” policy for participating nations.

The Seattle committee stated on Monday that it has no role in on-field ceremonies or stadium operations, noting that such matters fall under FIFA’s authority.

The Egyptian Football Association, along with the Football Federation of Iran, strongly condemned the initiative and demanded its cancellation.

OutKick wrote that the action reflects a “Democratic cultural failure,” arguing that it imposes such branding on a match between two teams whose national laws oppose LGBTQ recognition.

Newsweek also labeled the decision “non-sporting,” warning that it could heighten tensions at the venue and undermine the World Cup’s spirit of unity.
