Supreme Leader accepts pardon or commutation of prison sentences

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has approved a proposal by the Iranian judiciary to pardon or commute sentences of 1,760 prisoners.

The pardon and reduction of sentences by the Supreme Leader was granted on Thursday on the imminent occasion of Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Head of Iran’s Judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei had asked Ayatollah Khamenei to pardon or commute the sentences of prisoners who were eligible for amnesty.

Article 110 of the Iranian Constitution authorizes the Supreme Leader to pardon or commute prison terms of the inmates upon a proposal made by the country's judiciary chief.
