Iran, Syria FMs meet in Moscow ahead of quartet meeting

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad in Moscow, ahead of a quartet meeting on Syria which also features Turkiye and Russia.

Amirabdollahian and Mekdad met on Wednesday morning and had a working breakfast afterward.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Moscow late on Tuesday to attend the quartet meeting on Syria which is chiefly aimed at restoring normal diplomatic ties between Damascus and Ankara.

Turkiye cut off its diplomatic ties with Syria in March 2012, a year after the Arab country was targeted by foreign-backed militants, including those supported by Ankara.

Late last month, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Russia, Syria, Turkiye, and Iran met in Moscow in a bid to work out a detente between Damascus and Ankara and discuss the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the war-ravaged country.
