Iran chief banker in Qatar for financial talks

The governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) has arrived in Qatar to hold talks with officials in the Arab country on ways to boost banking and financial cooperation and amid signs that Iran is gaining access to funds that have remained blocked in other countries because of US sanctions.

Mohammad Reza Farzin’s Wednesday visit to Qatar is taking place within the framework of the Iranian government’s regional policy on promoting economic relations with the neighboring countries, said a report by the IRNA.

However, Iran’s Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber told reporters on the sidelines of the Cabinet meeting in Tehran earlier in the day that a part of Iran's funds in other countries may be released in the near future.

Mokhber was also making a reference to recent reports suggesting that nearly $3 billion worth of Iranian funds in other countries have been released.

CBI governor Farzin has visited several regional countries in recent months in a bid to work out mechanisms that could facilitate banking transactions between the CBI and other countries.
