Iran's Border Police Commander Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaqari has demanded an apology from Azerbaijan for killing of an unarmed Iranian border guard for straying into the country.

Speaking Sunday on the sidelines of a Tehran gathering of the Iranian border guard commanders, Brigadier General Zolfaqari said that Azeri officials have so far failed to make a formal apology for firing 14 rounds of gunshots at the unarmed Iranian border guard.

On November 19, the Iranian border guard erroneously entered the Azerbaijani territory and was immediately shot dead by Azeri security forces.

Following the incident, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the Azeri envoy to Tehran to protest fatal the shooting.

The head of the Border Affairs Office in Iran's Foreign Ministry censured the brutal killing of the Iranian soldier by Azeri border guards and said such an act contravenes international regulations and flouts agreements between the two countries.

The Iranian official also called on the Azeri government to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Azerbaijani ambassador expressed regret over the incident and assured that Tehran's message would be conveyed to Baku as soon as possible and that a response would be relayed to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
