According to Khabar Online’s political correspondent, some days after the meeting of Iranian nuclear delegation with the representatives of 5+1 group- comprised of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany- in Iraqi capital which prompted different responses, the comments and opinions on the event are still being offered.
One of these opinions was given yesterday by Iraqi ambassador to Tehran who believesholding the meeting in itself was a step forward and the event was held in an atmosphere different from the earlier ones.
"The language Iran and 5+1 group used in Baghdad was soft and aimed at reaching mutual understanding. Moreover, the concerned parties didn't set new preconditions. As a result we saw they adopted a positive approach," Majid al-Sheikh said.
"An appropriate dialogue took place on the Iranian nuclear issue within the same frameworks we expected, therefore both sides decided to continue the negotiations in Moscow," Iraqi ambassador to Tehran added according to FNA.
Noting that Iran's nuclear case is political not technical, he asserted: "At the beginning, the negotiations were not supposed to be conducted in more than one round, however later it became evident that Iran and 5+1 group are insistent on continuing the talks, so we regard Baghdad meeting as a threshold of efforts to resolve the nuclear dispute."
"Iraq was also insistent on drawing a conclusion from the meeting. Although we didn't intervene in the core of discussions, our Foreign Minister [Hoshiyar Zebari] and other officials of Iraqi government made attempts to encourage the concerned parties to pursue their negotiations," Majid al-Sheikh said.
"We expected the meeting arrives at more positive results, but because Iran's nuclear case is so complicated, the event didn't reach to our desirable results," Iraqi Foreign Minister added.
Before Iran's talks with the six world powers on May 22-24 in Baghdad, Iraqi ambassador to Iran had said a historic dialogue would possibly take place in Baghdad meeting and suggested that the importance of negotiations is comparable with Arab League Summit which can be a landmark in ending regional crisis.
He had also declared that during discussions with the EU envoys, Iraqi officials emphasized that in order to settle the nuclear row, a mutual confidence should be formed between both sides. Majid al-Sheikh was hopeful that Baghdad meeting leads to a new stage of relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and 5+1 group.
Furthurmore, earlier at a news conference Hoshiyar Zebari had suggested that the success of the event in Baghdad meeting would be in the best interests of Iraq, although he avoided to take sides.
The next round of talks on Iran's nuclear program is scheduled to be held on June 18 and 19 in Moscow.
On the other hand, some political factions and analysts in Iran believe Baghadad meeting was not conclusive. As they say, the problem lies in the West’s excessive expectations in negotiation with the Islamic Republic and 5+1 group’s insistence on its earlier stances.
