incursion into Syrian airspace by the Turkish warplane is a questionable [act] and it is also certain that the assaulted country will defend itself,” Hossein Naqavi-Hosseini, spokesman of Majlis (parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, noted on Monday.
The lawmaker said Turkey has admitted that its warplane entered Syrian airspace and Syria’s reaction has been quite natural.
By doing so, Naqavi-Hosseini said, Turkey is trying to create a suitable atmosphere and pave the way for NATO intervention in Syria.
The Iranian MP stated that recent allegations about the role of Russia in the incident should be considered along the same lines.
“The situation in Syria and the unfortunate meddling of some neighboring countries in the internal affairs of this country have caused much sensitivity,” he added.
Naqavi-Hosseini said hostile forces are trained and armed in neighboring countries and sent into Syria in order to carry out terrorist operations.
On June 22, Syria said its air defense forces have shot down a Turkish F-4 Phantom jet fighter in the Syrian airspace which Damascus stresses is “according to the laws that govern such situations.” The aircraft crashed into the Mediterranean Sea.
The aircraft was downed in Syria’s territorial waters west of the village of Om al-Tuyour in the Lattakia province, 10 kilometers from the beach, the Syrian military said on Friday.
