“Iran is serious in defending the Syrian people and national sovereignty as the resistance axis against the Zionist regime [of Israel] and will stand by the country’s nation,” said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of Iran’s Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.
Boroujerdi made the remarks in a meeting with Head of Syria's National Security Committee Mohammad Sobhi Abou al-Shamat and Chairman of the Syrian Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee Fadia Deeb in Tehran on Sunday.
“[Iran's] Majlis will back any measure to support Syria against the plots of its enemies,” Boroujerdi added, saying that the Syrian nation would undoubtedly overcome the current crisis.
“The resistance of the Syrian nation is an example for the resistance of independent nations against global powers,” the Iranian lawmaker said.
Al-Shamat, for his part, said Syria’s resistance against the inhumane actions of Israel was the reason behind the current plots hatched against the Arab country.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011.
Damascus says outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorists are behind the unrest while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the violence.
