Addressing the UN General Assembly for the last time as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran; on Wednesday Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered his speech to the 67th General Assembly of the United Nations.

Just as many had expected Iran’s President wanted his last speech at the UN to be remembered by both his supporters and his opponents. He slammed the current global politics calling it discriminatory, based on inequality, and characterized by unilateralism and double-standards.

The Iranian President dubbed capitalism as a failed practice and the reason behind the rise in global poverty and the widening gap between the rich and the poor. Ahmadinejad also called for a new world order based on justice and an equal share in global decision making for all nations while criticizing veto right held by five of the security council members.

It appears that Tehran sees the solution to the global problems in reforms within the UN.

During the 16th NAM summit held in Tehran last month, Iran and most Non Aligned Movement states called for a new and stronger United Nations with more executive power based on the decisions of the general assembly and not just the security council.

Iran currently holds the presidency of the 120 member Non Aligned Movement which already constitutes two third of the UN general assembly, the biggest block of UN voters.

Addressing the UN general assembly as the president of the Islamic Republic, President Ahmadinejad repeatedly stressed on the importance of a common global management the main motto of the non aligned movement. Many believe that President Ahmadinejad’s speech clearly outlined Iran’s stance as the president of the non aligned movement.
