An Iranian lawmaker says the US and its allies are trying to settle political scores with the Islamic Republic by passing a UN resolution against Iran’s human rights situation.

Spokesmen of Iran Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Seyyed Hossein Naqavi Hosseini said on Tuesday that the anti-Iran UN resolution has been politicized.

“Western countries use international organization as tools to advance their objectives,” Hosseini added.

The Iranian lawmaker stated that the opposition of China, Russia, Brazil and Belarus to the resolution passed by the UN General Assembly's Human Rights Committee shows the “weakening position of Western countries.”

On Tuesday, the General Assembly's Third Committee passed the non-binding resolution, which was drafted by Canada and co-sponsored by other Western countries, with 83 countries voting in favor, 31 against, and 68 abstentions.

During the meeting, many delegates criticized the use of such country-specific resolutions, which they said set double standards and undermined international cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Earlier, Mohammad Khazaei, Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, said the resolution was drafted “out of the urgencies and exigencies of Canadian internal politics...to advance its self-centered political interests.”

“The Canadian resolution against Iran solely seeks the political interests and goals of its sponsors. It certainly lacks credibility,” he added.
