During a meeting with members of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) on Wednesday, Larijani said Tehran is positive on the overall situation in the region given the sweeping wave of pro-democracy developments in the Arab world.
He referred to the victories of Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas movement against the Israeli army and the anti-US movement in Iraq following the US-led invasion of the country in 2003 as the manifestation of the potential capabilities of resistance movements in the region.
Larijani emphasized Iran’s call for strategic unity of the Muslim world and warned against sectarian conflicts between Shia and Sunni Muslims.
Fueling sectarian divisions among the followers of the two faiths is a dirty act that does not favor the Muslim world in any way but rather favors the Zionist enemy, he said.
“The Zionist regime [of Israel] should not be allowed to pull itself together because this regime is in isolation,” the Iranian official urged.
Larijani, who met with his Iraqi counterpart Osama al-Nujaifi in Baghdad on Tuesday, held talks with ISCI leader, Ammar al-Hakim, and is also scheduled to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
