Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has attended an open session of Majlis to brief the lawmakers on the country’s economy.

The president attended the session on Wednesday and provided the Iranian lawmakers with the latest information about the country’s economy in a speech that lasted for nearly one and a half hour.

Among the major issues of his speech was the implementation of the second phase of the subsidy reform plan.

The Iranian president described the first phase of the economic plan as successful, stressing that its implementation has controlled inflation and brought about social justice.

He urged the lawmakers to pave the way for the implementation of the second phase.

Ahmadinejad went on to say that the full implementation of the economic measure could help the country cut dependence on oil revenue.

Following President Ahmadinejad’s address to the Majlis, Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said the lawmakers are not opposed to the subsidy reform plan as long as it boosts production. He said, however, the subsidy reform plan should have been executed in such a way as to enhance production in the country.

The lawmakers called on President Ahmadinejad to stay and listen to their concerns about the country’s economy. But Ahmadinejad said he could not stay due to his busy schedule.

The Iranian president insists that the second phase of the subsidy reform plan be implemented before his second term ends.

This comes as most of the lawmakers have been opposed to a hasty execution of the plan, arguing that any rushed implementation of the economic measure would increase inflation.
