“Syria opposition should be convinced to negotiate with the [Syrian] government and the result of talks must be accepted by everyone without imposing a particular solution,” Ali Akbar Salehi said on the sidelines of the 12th summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cairo on Tuesday.
The Iranian foreign minister reaffirmed Tehran’s support for any initiative that would contribute to peace and stability in Syria, saying the Islamic Republic firmly believes that peace will be only achieved in Syria through political dialogue between the government and the opposition.
In December 2012, Iran unveiled the details of the six-point plan to resolve the ongoing crisis in Syria, which calls for an immediate end to all violence.
“Iran has always encouraged the Syrian government to implement reforms…,” Salehi said referring to the six point plan.
The plan calls for sending humanitarian aid to Syrians following the end of all conflicts, lifting all economic sanctions imposed against the country, and facilitating the return of displaced Syrians.
It also urges talks between the Syrian government and the representatives of all Syrian groups regardless of their political and social affiliations in order to form a national reconciliation committee.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that Damascus says is being orchestrated from outside the country.
