US Secretary of State John Kerry has asked the US Congress to allow nuclear talks between world powers and Iran to proceed without interference as the self-imposed deadline for the negotiations looms.
Kerry’s comments come amid threats by mainly the GOP members of the US Congress to impose new economic sanctions on Iran, a move that can potentially upset Washington’s allies who are involved in the talks.
On Monday and Tuesday, Kerry, who is the US’ main negotiator at the talks between the P5+1 group of countries and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, is expected to brief Congress on the current developments with respect to the negotiations.
Most specifically, Kerry will be touching on the factors of the framework agreement that was reached by Iran, the US, the UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany earlier this month in the Swiss city of Lausanne.
"Everything I have laid out is a fact. And I'll stand by them. In the end it's really the final agreement that will determine it,” Kerry said.
