Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohamad Ali Alhakim in a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif on Thursday apologized for the attacks on Iran's consulate in Najaf, reiterating the Iraqi government's commitment for protecting Iranian diplomatic sites and diplomats.

He made the call to apologize for the disaster in which a number of saboteurs set fire to Iran's consulate in Najaf.

Earlier, Iraqi Foreign Ministry in a statement on Thursday strongly condemned the attack on Iran's consulate in Najaf.

The statement said the attack was to hurt deeply rooted ties between Iraq and Iran.
