Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said today that by launching a web-based virtual embassy the United States admits to its mistake in cutting diplomatic ties with Iran.

According to Khabar Online correspondent, he suggested: "The virtual embassy won't relay the US message to the Iranian people."

The United States opened a virtual online embassy to reach out to Iranians despite the absence of official ties. It offers US policy statements in English and Farsi, information on US visas to share views via social media, AFP reported.

The virtual embassy will allow Iranians to start applications for visas to the United States. But Iranians will still need to go overseas, typically to Turkey or the United Arab Emirates, to obtain visas.

Mehmanparast went on to say: "During the last three decades, Iranians have received the United States' message through sanctions imposed on them, the civilian jet airliner shot down [by the US Navy in 1988] over the Persian Gulf, and the support given by the White House to Iranian terrorist groups including MKO, Abdolrahman Rigi and Tondar."

"Full-scale and of course unsuccessful attempts made against the technological progress of Iran and Iranian scientists, leveling unfounded accusations against the Islamic Republic and other damaging measures are the other messages received by Iranian nation," the Foreign Ministry spokesman stated.

"As a matter of fact, the problem of the US statesmen lies in the fact that from the time they planned and implemented a coup d'état against the democratic and popular government of Iran [headed by Prime Minister Muhammad Mossadegh] in pre-revolution era, to their involvement in the assassination of Iranian scientists in the present times, they haven't heard the message of Iranian nation which seeks happiness, welfare and calls for independence, freedom and the Islamic Republic government," he added.

"Pursuing unhelpful policies adopted by the US government against the Republic of Iran is simply justified within such framework," Mehmanparast concluded.

The United States and Iran severed their diplomatic ties in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution, which led to the collapse of the pro-West Iranian monarchy regime and later the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran.
