Certain Western governments seek to cause insecurity in the region, Vahidi told reporters on Tuesday, adding that, “We recommend friendly and regional countries not to fall into the trap of such ploys so that no deplorable events occur.”
He pointed to the recent developments in the region and said the real friends of Syria would support the trend of reforms that has commenced in the Middle Eastern country.
“None of the global powers has condemned the terrorist attacks in Syria so far, which is in fact considered some sort of support for the terrorists and is not acceptable,” Vahidi further said.
The Iranian minister expressed hope that the friendly countries in the region would pay more heed to “the region’s sensitivity, the adverse consequences of such [deceitful] moves [by the West] and the wrong approach that may become commonplace.”
He noted that the Syrian nation will not forgive those who support the terrorists and emphasized that the reforms initiated in Syria should be backed.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since mid-March 2011.
The West and the Syrian opposition blame Damascus for the turmoil, but the government says “terrorists” are responsible for the unrest, which it says is being orchestrated from abroad.
On February 20, the Syrian President revealed that “some foreign countries” are fueling the turmoil in Syria by supporting and funding “armed terrorist groups fighting against the government.”
