“A stable growing Iraq in Iran’s neighborhood contributes to the establishment of stability and peace in the region,” Larijani said in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Sunday, IRNA reported.
Larijani expressed satisfaction over the growing ties between Iran and its western neighbor in all areas and said, “The two Muslim and neighbor countries of Iran and Iraq need to enhance their constructive roles in resolving regional crises and issues.”
He also called for the further expansion of cooperation and consultations between the two states on regional and international issues.
Regarding the developments in Syria, Larijani said certain regional countries, who themselves lack democratic backgrounds, seek to ‘establish democracy’ in Syria by meddling in its domestic affairs.
He said that Syria’s internal problems need to be resolved peacefully and through gradual reforms in the political, social and economic processes of the country.
Maliki, for his part, described the relations between Iran and Iraq as very good, growing, brotherly and amicable.
He pointed to the numerous commonalities between the two countries for the further development of the ties and said the expansion of cooperation between the two states on regional and international issues is of significance to Baghdad.
“We seek the establishment of stability and peace in the whole region,” he said, adding that Syria must be given adequate opportunity to solve its problems.
