Iranian Majlis (parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani has hailed the Syrian people and government for refusing to bow to Western plots and threats.

“The resistance of the people and government of Syria against foreign plots is admirable,” Larijani said at a meeting with Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi in Tehran on Wednesday.

Syria’s geopolitical situation and its involvement in the anti-Zionist resistance are the reasons why the enemies have been pressuring the Syrian nation and government, he added.

The Iranian official criticized some countries for making “an obvious historical mistake by their senseless following of dictated hegemonic policies.”

Larijani said the people and officials in Syria must be given the chance to build a bright future for the next generations by political, social and economic reforms.

Condemning the foreign-backed militancy in the country, he said, “Democracy cannot be brought into a country through assassination and weapons.”

Syria has experienced almost two years of deadly unrest, which has claimed the lives of many people, including large numbers of security forces.

Damascus says the chaos that began in the country in March 2011 is being orchestrated from abroad and blames some regional countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for funding and training the militants fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

There are also reports that a very large number of the armed militants - largely affiliated with al-Qaeda terrorists - are foreign nationals.
